365 Days of Dylan, Day 37: One Too Many Mornings from Bob Dylan's third album The Times They Are a-Changin' released in 1964. 

Like many of Dylan's songs, One Too Many Mornings had multiple lives, with various live and outtake versions released by Dylan, not to mention a slew of covers from Johnny Cash, Joan Baez, Jerry Jeff Walker, Dion and even the Association.

I like the alternate take from Dylan's Bootleg Series, Volumes 1-3, Rare and Unreleased, 1963-1991. This version has a cleaner, more straightforward sound. It starts slow and picks up with a cheerful energy.

Then there's Jeff Healey's burning cover, featured in the movie Roadhouse, that starts out sounding more than a little like "All Along the Watchtower."

365 Days of Dylan, Day 10: You Ain't Goin' Nowhere

365 Days of Dylan, Day 10: "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" from The Basement Tapes.

You Ain't Goin' Nowhere lyrics.

Tell you how old I am, when I was a kid, the J.C. Penney in the Richmond (Indiana) Square Mall sold albums, as in vinyl. They had a nice selection between the boys' clothing and furniture departments. It seemed like The Basement Tapes was always on prominent display on an end cap.

As a boy, browsing the records, I'd stop to stare at the cover of The Basement Tapes. Lots of stories under those hats and behind those beards. And what's the deal with that little RCA-looking dog?

If you like Dylan covers and alternate takes, "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" does not disappoint.

The version on The Basement Tapes Sampler: The Bootleg Series, Volume 11 begins, "Now look here dear Sue, you best feed the cats. The cats need feeding and you're the one to do it."

But who feeds the dog? You know, the one on the album cover. And is this the "dog that talks?" Still so many questions.

I've listened to the The Byrds and the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band's version of "You Ain't Goin' Nowhere" as much as Dylan's original or any others.

Then there's Joan Baez sweet-sounding cover from Baez Sings Dylan.

And Glen Hansard and Marketa Irglova from I'm Not There (Music from the Motion Picture).

I really like Oscar Isaac's cover that I discovered while working on this post.

365 Days of Dylan, Day 8: "Everything is Broken" from Tell Tale Signs: The Bootleg Series Vol. 8

"Everything is Broken" first appeared on Oh, Mercy. But I like the alternate version on Tell Tale Signs.

That's the thing with Dylan, you scratch a song and find other versions you like just as well or better. Or you see him live and he takes a classic song in another completely different direction. Art breathes. Art evolves. As it is with Bob Dylan's music.

Along with alternate takes, another thing you get plenty of when you scratch are amazing covers of Dylan's music. Until I sat down for some heavy listening to prep for this post, I had not yet heard Kenny Wayne Shepherd's or R.L. Burnside's versions of "Broken."

Though I had heard Tim O'Brien's from Red on Blonde, his fabulous album of Dylan songs.

365 Days of Dylan, Day 6: Tough Mama

Six days into my year-long tribute to Bob Dylan and one thing I love about this project already is the opportunity to listen to songs I may have missed or forgotten along the way.

I love the loose, basement-jam quality of "Tough Mama." Evidently, Jerry Garcia did too.

As a child of the 1960s (and I literally mean "a child." I was born in 1960), I'd often confuse "Mr. Tambourine Man" with two other songs, Jerry Jeff Walker's "Mr. Bojangles" and the Lemon Pipers' "Green Tambourine." All three tunes lived together in my young, impressionable psychedelic-folk-fueled mind.

I'm also pretty sure I heard The Byrds' version of "Mr. Tambourine Man" before Dylan's. It hit #1 in 1965 (the same year Dylan released the song on Bringing It All Back Home). Only later did I connect the song to Bob Dylan.

The Byrds' cover of "Mr. Tambourine Man" upped the jangle ante and has been cited as a significant influence of the folk-rock explosion the late 1960s and early 1970s.

With its dozens of covers and staying power, "Mr. Bojangles" made Dylan's music accessible to a wider audience, even spawning (and I think that's the appropriate word) a rendition by William Shatner.

The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll, Lyrics.

"The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll," like many of Dylan's songs, chronicles a violent incident of social injustice and speaks out for someone who otherwise would not have had a voice. 

We can't forget the mistakes of our past -- and our present -- if we hope to learn from and stop repeating them, if we hope to keep moving ourselves and our shared community forward. 

Songs like "The Lonesome Death of Hattie Carroll" help us remember, reflect and hopefully learn.

365 Days of Dylan, Day 3: "Gotta Serve Somebody" from Slow Train Coming.

I think of this song in two ways. Every day, for my family, my coworkers and clients, I try to be of service. That's how I help define my purpose. The other way relates to something Steve Murphy says in the second season of Narcos, "Everybody has a boss."

I also love the slow, smooth groove of Bob's vocals with the background singers and instrumentation.
